The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), a governance framework in Kenya is the brainchild of Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta, and opposition leader, Raila Odinga. The idea was propelled after the March 2018 “Handshake” as a way of dealing with electoral related violations and cyclic bickering by both winners and losers in especially the presidential race in the Kenya. The BBI taskforce was formed to basically look into, and make recommendations on nine facets that Kenyatta and Odinga had decided were crucial to the effort to “create a united nation for all Kenyans living today, and all future generations”. …

New Zealand lockdown has eased to alert Level 2 starting midnight on Wednesday 13th May 2020. This has given me some time to narrate a data story of how I fared especially at security alert Level 4 where literally the entire country was shut. Three things I promised to work on during this time :-

1. Finish up one cloud data engineering certification. I’m proud to say I completed the Google Data Engineering certification. 6 courses with lots of practicals and connected fundamentals between them. Needs time but I’m proud to have achieved this specialization. My accomplishment is here. Please…

Translation service more so by Google has been a life savior for many people. Its interesting when in a different country and two way communication is an issue because of the language barrier. This happened to me several times when I lived in China.

I noted the other day that Google incorporated their translation API in Google sheets which is a vital took when one wants to translate to several languages in one place and probably print out a copy to carry along.

Syntax for the translation is as below : —

GOOGLETRANSLATE(text, [source_language, target_language])

Entry in a cell is…

Day one of the state of emergency declaration by Prime Minister Jacinda Adern comes with unprecedented side effects. Boredom to some extent and that has to be put to good use. New Zealand is basically locked down. Unless one is provisioning an essential service, then self isolation is the only option out to flatten the COVID-19 infections curve in the country. This has provided me the chance to write about a trip I made at the beginning of this year.I had actually been thinking of documenting it, but just didn’t have the time. …

The city of Nairobi at night as seen from the International Space Station.

More often than not, I get to overthink about Kenya, my motherland. I think of how ambitious, sometimes combative and often kind hearted the citizenry are in general. Not sure if Miguna Miguna fits this bill but, probably yes, in his right. This gave me this idea of coming up with a data perspective description of our nature as Kenyans, at least for 2019. Actually this popped up as I thought hard about my life on board a Boeing 717 flight from Honolulu to Kahului, Maui for the 53rd HICSS conference. These planes sometimes are not for the faint hearted…

Africa over time has been riddled by negative connotations. I’m in no position to defend or support such assertions as in most cases, such views I believe are solely in the eyes of the proponents. That aside, I chose to take a data perspective in looking at the positives in the African continent more so on the overall citizenry happiness. Before, I delve deep in the analyses, please take sometime and read through the the top five 2019 positive stories from the continent as per BBC. Teacher Tabichi had to be there, may be I’m just being too Kenyan. …

President Uhuru Kenyatta gives his State of the Nation address in Parliament, Nairobi, on March 15, 2017 https://bit.ly/2YJT28T

As the president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uhuru_Kenyatta, is charged with the responsibility of informing Kenyans about the progresses the government has made each year through the State of the Nation (SoN) addresses. He came to power in 2013 thus his first SoN was in 2014. I looked at the speeches and one thing struck out. They were just too long and boring to read for a person like me. Listening to them would have made sense, but I missed that all together. Therefore, I deployed a few Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to extract some knowledge in the speeches…

https://www.tepapa.govt.nz/visit/plan-your-visit/getting-here

I paid a visit to this museum about four months ago on a tour of Wellington, the windiest capital of the world. The Māori name, ‘Te Papa Tongarewa’, translates literally to ‘container of treasures’ and it began in 1865 as a tiny Colonial Museum.

The building is magnificent as well as the exhibitions in there. Two places I loved were the Marae, and the section documenting migrant journeys to New Zealand. As an aspiring data scientist, I had one goal after leaving the place. I wanted to find out whether the positive feeling I had was a replica of what…
